Discover Mâcon Wines
The Mâcon appellation, located in the southernmost part of Burgundy in the Saône-et-Loire department, is renowned for its approachable, flavorful, and expressive wines. Produced on sunny slopes benefiting from a warmer climate than the rest of Burgundy, Mâcon wines beautifully express the generosity and freshness of the Mâconnais terroir.
Terroir and Characteristics
The Mâcon terroir features mainly clay-limestone soils, often rich in white limestone, providing excellent drainage and ideal sun exposure for the vines. The warmer and sunnier climate compared to northern Burgundy allows the grape varieties to fully develop. Chardonnay dominates the production, while Pinot Noir and Gamay complete the range with harmonious red and rosé wines.
Wine Profile
Mâcon whites offer a fresh and fruity expression with aromas of white flowers, yellow-fleshed fruits, citrus, honey, and hazelnut. They are characterized by a nice roundness on the palate, lively acidity, and delicate minerality typical of the Burgundian style but sunnier. The reds and rosés, made from Pinot Noir and Gamay, are smooth and fresh, showing notes of cherry, raspberry, and sweet spices, with fine and silky tannins.
Food Pairings
Mâcon wines pair perfectly with a variety of dishes such as grilled fish, fresh seafood, roasted poultry, mild cheeses (e.g., aged Comté), and light summer salads. Their approachable style also makes them excellent for convivial aperitifs and light meals.
