Vacqueyras is a protected designation of origin located in the southern Rhône Valley, at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail, near Gigondas. Recognized as a communal AOC since 1990, Vacqueyras is now considered one of the major crus of the region, renowned for its full-bodied red wines, as well as its whites and rosés produced in smaller quantities.
The Vacqueyras terroir consists mainly of clay-limestone soils, rolled pebbles, and sandy terrains, benefiting from a warm and dry Mediterranean climate. This ideal combination produces rich, powerful, and expressive wines while maintaining a pleasant freshness. The emblematic grape varieties for reds are grenache, often complemented by syrah and mourvèdre. The rarer whites are crafted from grapes such as clairette, grenache blanc, roussanne, and bourboulenc.
Vacqueyras stands out with full-bodied red wines featuring deep color and complex aromatic intensity, combining black fruit, spices, garrigue, with occasional notes of leather or cocoa when matured. On the palate, they offer balanced structure with present but smooth tannins and a warm, generous finish. The whites display aromatic elegance with floral, citrus, and stone fruit notes, alongside subtle honeyed touches. The rosés offer lively freshness with aromas of fresh red fruits and a pleasant roundness.
Vacqueyras reds pair excellently with robust dishes such as leg of lamb, grilled pork chops, or Époisses cheese. Whites complement grilled fish, seafood, or aged goat cheeses. Rosés are ideal for aperitifs, summer salads, or light grilled foods.
