To the eye
A superb ruby-red colour, intense and deep, with violet and purple highlights that reflect the vintage’s fine concentration.
Nose
Highly expressive, complex and exceptionally refined. It releases a bouquet of ripe red and black fruits (crushed raspberry, black cherry, blackberry), quickly enveloped by notes of sweet spices (liquorice, white pepper), garrigue and tapenade. As it opens up, it reveals a delicate hint of dried rose and peony – the signature aroma of the great sandy terroirs.
Palate
The attack is velvety, almost sensual. The wine displays a full-bodied character, brimming with luscious fruit, and a texture of great refinement. The tannins are present but infinitely supple, completely integrated into the wine’s richness. The finish is long and warm, yet balanced by a hint of minty freshness.
Pairing
This great wine from the Southern Rhône calls for food with character. It will bring out the best in a leg of lamb cooked for seven hours with herbes de Provence, a fillet of beef en croûte, a duck breast with cherries or a fine wild boar stew. As for cheeses, pair it with a mature Saint-Nectaire or a sheep’s-milk Tomme. It must be decanted 1 to 2 hours before serving, and served at around 16°C.
Aging potential
The 2018 vintage is already very approachable thanks to its silky tannins, but the Magnum bottle really brings out its full potential. Whilst it can be enjoyed now after decanting, this giant is built to stand the test of time and will age majestically for 10 to 15 years in the cellar.
